In Australia in 2004, cars contributed 41.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide or equivalent greenhouse gases and trucks and light commercial vehicles contributed 26.2 million tonnes. Together these represent 12% of Australia's total emissions and since 1990 this figure has increased by 25%. (Source: Australian Government Green Vehicle Guide 2007)

UQ is committed to providing the university community with effective, diverse, and sustainable transportation. To help reduce parking and traffic problems, and to foster a healthy lifestyle, the University encourages public transport, walking, and cycling as alternatives to driving to UQ.
In working to expand bicycle use, Traffic and Parking offers extensive bike parking throughout the campus. Traffic and Parking also manages UQ’s Bicycle User Group (UQBUG).
UQ’s Centre for Transport Strategy and Intelligent Transport Systems Research Laboratory conduct research on sustainable transport strategies.
Environmental Services promote sustainable transport through the Green Office and Unigreen Awareness Programs.
For every litre of petrol used, 2.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide are released from a car's exhaust.

If you are looking to buy or sell, UQBUG has a page showing Bikes for Sale.
Kistend Campus Travel Green Policy - Kistend Campus Travel, the air travel provide for UQ has a Green Policy to allow travellers to offset their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from air travel.
Greenfleet plants trees to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of Property & Facilities' fleet vehicles (member since 2004). Apart from neutralising carbon dioxide emissions these plantings contribute to the revegetation of fragile areas within Australia. Since 1997, Greenfleet has planted more than two million native trees on behalf of individual motorists and organisations.
The Centre for Transport Strategy contributes to integrated and sustainable transport by undertaking research, providing professional development, collating transport related data, providing consulting services and developing policies in transport strategy.
The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Research Laboratory - the Laboratory is aimed at developing, evaluating and modelling the impacts of advanced transport technologies aimed at enhancing environmental quality and improving the safety and efficiency of the transport system.

Offset your air travel carbon dioxide emissions next time you travel with Kirsten Campus Travel
If it's short take a walk
» Before jumping in the car consider whether you really need to drive. Each litre of petrol consumed emits 2.5kg of greenhouse gases so if it’s short, take a walk!
» If you need to go further why not ride a bike, scoot, ride a skateboard, roller blade, do something different — have a bit of fun getting around.
Look after you car and drive efficiently
» A well-maintained car, driven carefully, can use significantly less petrol (and so have a smaller environmental impact) than the same left unmaintained. The way you drive the car also has an impact on the car's fuel consumption.
» Use air conditioning sparingly - running the air-con continuously while driving will increase fuel consumption.
» Plan your day effectively - have a meeting? Plan it for the beginning or the end of your day to reduce car trips.
» Buy a small or hybrid car. See the Green Vehicle Guide for more information.
