Australia is experiencing its worst drought in recorded history. As one of the largest water users in South east Queensland, UQ recognises the importance of focusing on water conservation measures. UQ achieved a 27% reduction in water consumption in the 2005/2006 period at St Lucia campus, making UQ the top water saver in the Brisbane City Council area for that period.

UQ has further reduced water consumption by 37% from 2005/2006 to 2006/2007. In total UQ has achieved a 50% reduction in water consumption since 2004.

Environmental Services is responsible for developing Water Efficiency Management Plans and monitors and reports on water consumption for UQ campuses and sites. For water consumption data for your area, contact Environmental Services, Property and Facilities Division or email unigreen@pf.uq.edu.au

Water Savings Projects

Property and Facilities Division uses an annual Water Efficiency Management Plan to help reduce water consumption on campus.
Property and Facilities has retrofitted all kitchens with water efficient taps and all bathrooms with water efficient pans, showers and taps to reduce water consumption.
Recycled water from Fairfield Sewage Treatment Plan is used to irrigate ovals.
Stormwater, directed into the large freshwater lake on St Lucia campus, is used to irrigate grounds and the Great Court area.
Two large 110,000 ltr rainwater tanks have been installed in the new General Purpose building on the north side of St Lucia campus. Other rainwater tanks have been installed where feasible.
Property and Facilities offers 50/50 funding to UQ Schools and Centres for water saving projects in their area. A range of projects have been undertaken over the last 12 months.

What you can do

Report water leaks to Property and Facilities' Works Control Centre Ph: 3365 2222 or email wcc@pf.uq.edu.au
Don't leave taps running.
If dishwasher is available, completely fill, then use it.
When diluting chemicals, run taps only as long as necessary.
When washing labware or other items, reduce flow to effective minimum.
Identify water saving projects in your area. Email Kevin O'Sullivan, Property and Facilities Division at: k.o'sullivan@pf.uq.edu.au to see if you are eligible to apply for P&F's 50/50 funding for water saving projects.
